I hope everyone is having a great summer. This year our Fair Vote team has been quite active. The need for electoral reform has never been more clear! We were out at the No Prorogue rallies, and organized two successful and well attended events in partnership with CAPP (the Participate event about building democracy, and the Strategic Voting Debate). We also had tables at the Multicultural Festival and NonViolence Festival this summer, where we collected pages of signatures for the Declaration of Voter's Rights, signed up three new members for Fair Vote Canada, and added many names to our mailing list. We were also glad to add three members to our executive in June! Thank you everyone for all your support of our local chapter. This fall we would like to organize more events in partnership with CAPP. This week, the local Conservatives (Mr. Braid and Mr. Woodworth) are having a "Roundtable on Democratic Reform" in Kitchener, hosted by the Minister of Democratic Reform Stephen Fletcher. This is a "by invitation only" event. I wonderered what others thought about hosting our own "Roundtable on Democratic Reform" this fall, with a couple of speakers on different ideas for reform and a discussion open to everyone? The other ideas we have been considering for fall are an "Electoral Reform 101" type session with a mock vote, where participants can find out how PR systems work, and a debate/discussion on the changing role of the media in politics. Any input to our planning team is much appreciated. (And of course, and open invitation to join the planning team anytime!). Anthony's not on the email list yet, but he had this suggestion for an event (see below). What do you think? I think a debate on a coalition (rather than a merger) would be interesting. Anita Hey Anita, I've got an idea - but it would be more a winter/late fall suggestion. I was thinking given the talk about a Liberal-NDP merger it would be interesting to host a debate on the merrits of joining. We could find someone in favour of amalgamating the parties (ideally a non-member of either party) and then have them debate a liberal & NDP in favour of keeping the parties seperate Anthony ----- Forwarded message from lanickerson at b2b2c.ca ----- Date: Fri, 23 Jul 2010 12:07:40 -0400 From: lanickerson at b2b2c.ca Reply-To: FVC Waterloo Region Discussion Subject: [fvc-wat-disc] [fvc-wat-announce] Fall Events - Input Requested To: fvc-wat-announce at listserv.thinkers.org Hello Fair Vote supporters in Waterloo Region! Message-ID: <1280442997.4c520275c5f24@webmail.b2b2c.ca> Hi Fair Vote Waterloo Region supporters! I've booked us a table at an event called "A Tribute to Woodstock", August 7, 4-10 PM, at Waterloo Public Square. Other community groups such as REEP, Grand River Car Share, the Green Party and other environmental and social justice type organizations will have tables. Lots of music and speeches! We may even have an opportunity to say a few words on behalf of Fair Voting between bands (keeping my fingers crossed). Please let me know if you can give an hour or two to sit at the Fair Vote table, and what times you could do. Your help is very much appreciated! Here's the facebook page for the event, if you're interested in finding out more: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=141783609173731 Anita
