We have three Fair Vote events coming up: The Strategic Voting Debate sponsored by CAPP, Fair Vote and Civis Mundi is on Wednesday May 12.Our Annual General Meeting is on Thursday June 3. And our table at the Multicultural Festival is on Sunday June 27. I hope to see many of you at these events! I especially invite and encourage you to support Fair Vote by attending the AGM this year, and consider running for a position on the executive. These positions are not time or labour intensive but are crucial to keeping our local chapter alive and strong. Again, here are the events: 1) "Strategic Voting: What's a Voter to Do? Wednesday May 12, 7-8:30 PM. Waterloo Recreation Complex, Room 200. Debate between Gary Shaul - Coordinator of Catch 22 Harper Conservatives campaign and Scott Piatkowsi, followed by discussion. Free snacks! Sponsored by Canadians Advocating Political Participation, Fair Vote Waterloo Region, and Civis Mundi. 2) Fair Vote Annual General Meeting: Thursday June 3, 7 PM, Queen Street Commons Cafe (upstairs room), 43 Queen Street South, Kitchener (across from The Working Centre). I have posted the agenda at the end of this email. 3) Fair Vote Booth at the Kitchener Waterloo Multicultural Festival. Sunday June 27, 12 PM to 9 PM, Victoria Park, Kitchener. There are three or four of us sharing time at the booth, but we would love to have more volunteers! If can give even an hour to greet the public and hand out literature, please contact me at onetann at hotmail.com. The festival is a wonderful opportunity for community groups to interact with the public as the festival attracts thousands of visitors each year. As well as multicultural food and entertainment, many local community agencies and political parties are there. Thank you again for your support of Fair Vote Waterloo Regional Chapter. Just a reminder that Fair Vote Waterloo is sponsoring the next CAPP participation event tonight, 7:00pm in Room 200 at the Waterloo Recreation Centre, 101 Father David Bauer Drive. Gary Shaul, Campaign Coordinator for "Catch 22 Harper Conservatives" will be debating Scott Piatkowski, "Advocate for Voting Your Conscience" on the merits of Strategic Voting. What's a voter to do? Well, come to the debate, for starters. After the debate some of us are gathering at the Duke of Wellington Pub at 33 Erb St W. to continue the political discussion, to find out more about "Catch 22 Harper Conservatives", to learn a bit about Fair Voting, and to consume a beverage or several. A map showing both locations is at http://cpwat.notlong.com/ For those on Facebook, there is more information at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=118467564838774 ===== On Saturday, 29 May 2010 Fair Vote Canada is holding its Annual Meeting and Conference from 8:30am to 5:00pm at the University of Ottawa - Desmarais Building, Room 12102 - 55 Laurier Ave., East - 12th Floor - Ottawa Ontario. The event was co-hosted by Canadians Advocating Political Participation (CAPP), Fair Vote, and Civis Mundi. We packed a room for 60 at the Waterloo Rec Complex, making this even more successful than "Participate!" event last month. The debaters - Gary Shaul from Catch 22 Harper Conservatives Campaign, and Scott Piatkowski who advocated voting your conscience - both presented sincere, intelligent arguments. Local candidates for the Liberals, NDP and Green were in attendance and the audience discussion was lively. Of most significance for Fair Voters, the discussion moved quickly away from whether to vote strategically and onto electoral reform. People were quick to realize that our archaic voting system is the reason we're forced to choose whether to vote strategically in the first place. There was much discussion about and support for proportional representation! Here's where you come in... The Fair Vote Waterloo Region Annual General Meeting is coming up on June 3 at 7 PM at the Queen Street Commons Cafe (across from the Working Centre, downtown Kitchener). We are a small group and very much welcome and encourage new members to join us on the executive. You can just show up and put your name forward for co-chair, treasurer, secretary or a member-at-large. In the case where more than one person puts his or her name forward for a postion, we will vote using STV - if not, we'll just sign you up!! Being part of the local Fair Vote team is not a big committment of time or energy (unless you want it to be!) and your willingness to step forward in support of this cause would be so much appreciated. Anita From: kelseyrwagner at gmail.com Date: Mon, 17 May 2010 19:03:47 -0400 Subject: electoral reform at the University of Waterloo To: onetann at hotmail.com Hi Anita My name is Kelsey Wagner. I'm the President of the Ottawa-Gatineau chapter of Fair Vote Canada. I wanted to congratulate you on your successful events with CAPP. Just wondering if you're a university or college student. I'm trying to help Fair Vote to reform elections at university and college students' unions. You may be aware that Wilfrid Laurier's Students' Union will now be electing its executive using the Single Transferable Vote system (you may even have been involved in that, as was Sean Geobey, one of the members of Fair Vote Canada's National Council). I've looked at the structure of University of Waterloo's Student Council, and with its multi-member constituencies from each faculty (based on the number of students in that faculty), I think it would be a good candidate for a switch from first-past-the-post to Single Transferable Vote. Just checking to see if you're a student there, or know anyone who is who might be interested in pursuing this. Fair Vote Canada has materials to support such a campaign, and I would be happy to help from Ottawa in any way I can, doing research into the relevant Council Procedures (p. 19-20): http://governance.feds.ca/system/files/2009-04-02+Combined+Council+Procedures+1-18+including+November+changes+2008.pdf and how to change them, and talking to people about the process. Please let me know if you know anyone who's interested, or if I can help in any way.
