Hi fellow Fair Vote supporters. I'm excited to announce the next Fair Vote/CAPP
event in our "Participate" series! With the election campaign under way, the
topic of political participation and democratic renewal could not be more
timely or important. We have two wonderful speakers coming from Toronto (bios
below). I hope many of you will be able to join us to share your ideas, have
your voice heard, and support the team or organizers who put on these events to
bring us together across party lines with a common goal of a democracy we can
believe in. (Find the poster attached). Please pass this on to anyone who may

CAPP Waterloo and Fair Vote Waterloo presents:

"Making Democracy Work"
Guest Speakers: John Deverell and Nick Van der Graaf
Thursday April 28, 2011, 7 PM
Adult Recreation Centre, Owl's Nest Room, 185 King St. S, Waterloo
Speakers to be followed by town hall style discussion.
Cost is free. Refreshments provided.

John Deverell will be speaking on "How We Might Fix Canada's Alleged Democracy."

John Deverell was a labour, politics and business reporter for the Toronto Star
for 25 years, Past President of CEP 87M Southern Ontario Newsmedia Guild,
co-author of the 1993 book “Democracy, Eh? A Guide to Voter Action”, and Fair
Vote Canada national councillor since 2001.

Nick Van der Graaf will be will be speaking on civic engagement and
understanding democracy as a culture.

Nick Van der Graaf is a long-time activist and journalist. He has covered
politics and elections in Canada, the United States and South Africa. After
participating in partisan politics for 25 years Mr. Van der Graaf became
involved with Fair Vote Canada and sat on FVC's National Council. He is
currently on the board of the Civics Education Network, a teacher-driven
organization, and is on the steering committee of CAPP-Toronto. Since 1988 he
has been involved with the women's movement.
