Fair Vote Canada is doing a survey which they have sent out to their supporters I created the survey, and am doing this because I feel it's very important for Fair Vote Canada to know what it's members and supporters think. In a real sense, you are Fair Vote Canada - what you think and what you want to see us do matters. If you could take five minutes to complete the survey I would really appreciate it. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FVC2012CampaignDirections Everyone who completes the survey will be entered in a draw for $100. There are only two days left to join the NDP to be eligible to vote and only one NDP leadership candidate running on cooperation, with the rest silent or strongly opposed. But over the next 3 years, it will be equally important for voters who want to support even exploring cooperation - influencing whether it happens and what would be important in such an agreement - to join any of the parties. This is the first movement by a very large citizen's group to say, "In this case, it's not enough to sign petitions and wave signs" - we must participate from the inside our democratic system, too. One important correction: Elizabeth May has publicly said she is open to some kind cooperation personally, but it is not correct to my knowledge that the party itself has officially endorsed this. The Green party itself needs to decide this in consultation with it's grassroots members and supporters. The Greens are unique in having "participatory democracy" within their very basic values - meaning that cooperation to achieve a voting system which more accurately hears the voices of Canadians might very well be supported - but they must reach this decision together. See many of you tonight at 7 for Cooperate for Canada. Anita ----- Original Message ----- From: Emma Ruby-Sachs - Avaaz.org To: lanickerson at b2b2c.ca Sent: Thursday, February 16, 2012 12:17 PM Subject: Canada -- Join the Party Dear friends across Canada, Only 39% of Canadians voted for this Government and they still won power. This could happen again unless we all join our national political parties and encourage cooperation. Click below to sign up or click here if you're already a party member: In weeks, leadership elections in our opposition parties will begin, deciding their positions for the next four years! If each of us joins the political party of our choice right now, we can change politics in Canada forever. The government in power only represents the priorities of 39% of the country, with the rest of our votes split amongst four other parties. But most Canadians think the opposition should cooperate to make sure the majority is represented in Parliament. The Greens already support this plan and a key leader of the NDP is moving his party in that direction. Now we need a wave of support from Canadian voters to make cooperation a reality. We can change the way the opposition behaves by joining their ranks. Parties begin to close their doors to new voting members this week. Click below to join our national parties now -- our voices as members can come together in a massive national call for cooperation and finally make democracy work in Canada: a.. Joining a party only costs a small fee -- 25 dollars for the NDP and 10 dollars for the Liberals, the two official parties holding leadership races. Joining the Conservatives costs 15 dollars and the Greens cost only 10. And, for the first time ever, cooperation is a key topic in the NDP leadership race. This might be a once-in-a-generation chance to make cooperation a reality and end vote-splitting and defensive voting for good. The Green's leader Elizabeth May supports cooperation, and high-profile NDP and Liberal party members are open to the idea. If we all become members of parties now, we can vote as a bloc for party heads who will put the public interest first by uniting to represent the majority of Canadians right now in Parliament and in our next election. Those of us joining the Conservative Party can act as an important force to bring progressive conservatism back to Canada. Let's help elect a government that represents the real majority of Canadians and ensure no one can hijack our elections with less than 40% of the vote. We had an amazing meeting last Thursday at Waterloo Inn. The room was packed with at least 80 people, and the audience was pretty evenly divided between NDP, Green and Liberal voters/supporters. The multi-partisan panel was high quality. The enthusiasm, energy and, most importantly, hope, was palpable in the room. In the last week, as a result of the Leadnow and Avaaz campaign, 9000 ordinary voters joined one of the parties to advocate one time cooperation. To get them to the point where one says to other, nationally, locally, or both: Let's talk. While the point of the party cooperation campaign is to bring in a government that can act on common values, and will depend on a three party commitment to proportional representation, Fair Vote Canada cannot endorse party cooperation. Fair Vote is a stand alone multi-partisan organization. I'm sending out this invitation to all of you who were not at the meeting, but may be interested in joining Citizens for Cross Party Cooperation. Our goal is to support and work in conjunction with the Leadnow.ca/cooperate, which may involve actions directed towards the local or national levels. Join here if you are interested: http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/citizensforcrosspartycooperationKW/ I will not be posting anything else about the cooperation campaign on this Fair Vote announcement list, unless there is a future event that might be of interest to some Fair Voters. Hallman School of Social Work Auditorium When: Thursday March 22, 7 PM Dennis's talk will be followed by Q+A and discussion. Free, everyone welcome, refreshments provided! Dennis Pilon was one of the founders of Fair Vote Canada, has just moved back to Ontario from British Columbia, and we are fortunate to have him coming to talk to us in Kitchener-Waterloo. I believe some folks from Fair Vote Canada Toronto, including Fair Vote Canada's Executive Director, will be joining us. Dennis will be addressing two questions that are key for those of us committed to achieving a vote that counts: 1) What lessons have we learned from efforts to reform Canada's voting system over the last ten years? 2) What does the movement for proportional representation need to do to succeed in future? About Dennis: His research has focused primarily on issues of democratization and democratic reform in western countries in both contemporary and historical contexts. In 2007 he published The Politics of Voting: Reforming Canada's Electoral System. Over the past decade, Professor Pilon has done considerable public speaking and media work commenting on many aspects of politics with reporters from print, radio and television, particularly on topics relating to elections and political parties. He is presently a member of the National Advisory Board of Fair Vote Canada, a citizens' group focused on gaining more proportional methods of voting for Canadian elections. He has also acted as a consultant on election issues for various legal firms, political parties, trade unions, community groups, and the Auditor General of Canada. The Women's Studies department was kind enough to pass word of Menocracy on to their association, some of whom attended, so I am returning the favour. It has relevance to questions around women in politics, obviously. Not just methods of voting. Dear Colleagues, Just a reminder of this event happening tomorrow - all are welcome! Tuesday February 28th, 7pm (Siegfried Hall, St. Jerome's University) Miss Representation The documentary Miss Representation, by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, and aired on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. The film explores how the media's misrepresentations of women have led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. Join us for a screening of the film and learn about a new project being launched where students will have the opportunity to empower others with their own stories of learning and transformation! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tracy Penny Light, Ph.D. Acting Chair, Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies Assistant Professor, Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies/History Adjunct Assistant Professor, Public Health and Health Systems (UW) St. Jerome's University STJ 1013B 290 Westmount Road North Waterloo, ON Canada N2L 3G3 519-884-8110 x.28291 tplight at uwaterloo.ca "Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." ~~Ralph Waldo Emerson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
