[fvc-wat-disc] Interview on The Agenda with Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant & Melissa Williams on ER

Here is a start. It’s too long at this point.
Comments?

Lydia Miljan’s opinion column about B.C.’s election and the perils of proportional representation once again demonstrate how the Fraser Institute’s bias against PR and fair representational democracy for all Canadians distorts the facts to suit their purpose.

She paints coalitions and working with other parties as bad. In fact, research shows that the 90% of developed democracies that use PR typically have more effective government and better long range planning with less policy lurch from one government to the next. This was emphasized by 88% of presentations to the Trudeau government’s special committee advocating PR.

Miljan’s assertion that over 80% of B.C. voted against the policies of the Green Party is nonsense. A majority of B.C. support many Green policies on pipelines and the environment.

Regarding the carbon tax, B.C. with widespread support, was the first jurisdiction in North America to implement this revenue neutral response to B.C.’s putting environmental concerns as top priority.

The problem is not how legitimately elected PR governments are disproportionately influenced by the smaller parties but how majority governments falsely elected by a minority of Canadians wield total power and remove representation of millions of Canadians who vote for other parties.

Trudeau promised electoral reform and then broke his promise saying it was his decision to make. He said there was no consensus among Canadians. 88% of representations to the special committee asked for proportional representation as did the vast majority of Canadians who attended town hall meetings across the country.

Parliament will vote on accepting the ERRE Report on May 31. Tell your MPs you want them to support the committee recommendations and PR.

The Fraser Institute is at it again.
The column in today’s Record is about the “perils of PR”.

Anyone want to respond.
The biggest falsehood is that our system works to deliver majority governments more often than not.
Not false majorities.

I thought the proposal to make a legal challenge against the government on the basis of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was excellent. It might win. In the meantime, it will keep the policy of PR in front of the media which has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

  Hello Everyone,

Steve Pakin interviewed two academics on The Agenda this week. I was looking for his interview with Karina Gould but instead found this interesting discussion. At 26 minutes, it is worth a watch.
