Hello FairVoters,

The astounding Liberal majority has opportunities for electoral reform
that, although different than that of a minority government, has the
potential to finally realize a fair electoral system. As citizens, our job
is to keep the pressure on the new Liberal government to ensure it makes
good on it's electoral promise of "making 2015 the last unfair election".

There are two exciting events coming up that will help us hold the newly
elected Liberal government and our new Liberal MP's accountable to their
election promise.

Next Wednesday, long time electoral reform advocate Paul Niijar will speak
on where and how PR has been won else where.

Date: Wednesday, October 28th
Time: 7 pm
Location: St. John's Kitchen
                97 Victoria Street North
                Kitchener

This is the abstract for the talk:

"On October 19th, millions of Canadians voted without helping anybody get
elected. There were distortions between the share of
seats political parties receive and their share of the popular vote.

The Liberal Party promised to reform our first-past-the-post voting system.
Are these promises realistic? How have other places transitioned from
first-past-the-post to more proportional systems? What is the path from
nice-sounding election promises to actually reforming the voting system?

In this talk we will explore some of the factors that lead to voting
system change, and examine some case studies of places that have made the
transition. Along the way we will pull some lessons from these experiences,
and look at the successes and failures of Canadian electoral reform
movements.

NOTE: The opinions and positions expressed reflect those of the speaker,
and are not necessarily official Fair Vote Canada policy."

Then on Monday, Nov. 9th, at 7 pm, in the Board Room of the Huether Hotel,
we will brainstorm and plan ways and means to work with our regional MP's
to make sure that they work for proportional representation in Ottawa. Who
know's, maybe Harold Albrecht will be more receptive to fairness now that
the CPC has been returned to the opposition benches. Let's have a beer and
plan our local role in making proportional representation a reality in
Canada.

Date: Monday, November 9th
Time: 7pm
Location: Board Room
                 Heuther Hotel
                 59 King Street
                 Waterloo

Looking forward to seeing you on the 28th!

Best regards,
Sharon Sommerville
