Hi Everyone! For the next Discussion Night we’ll meet at The Bauer
Kitchen again. I've made a reservation for 8, the maximum people
before there's a required minimum per-person charge. I understand
Bauer Kitchen may not be a suitable location for everyone; let me know
if you have another preferred location.

*What*: Fair Vote Waterloo Discussion Night
*When*: Monday, 25 April 2016 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm
*Where*: The Bauer Kitchen http://www.thebauerkitchen.ca/s,
*Location*: 187 King Street South, Waterloo, Ontario
*Map*: http://osm.org/go/ZXna9v9g--?m=&node=1629123471
*Facebook*: https://www.facebook.com/events/996498213737711/

You don't have to be a Fair Vote member to come to Discussion Night!
If you're interested in democracy, politics, and especially the
government's promise for electoral reform please come introduce yourself.

I don't want to detract attention from our own event, but the Basic
Income Waterloo Region group is having its first Pub Night on Monday
as well. I expect there's some overlap in interest between Fair Voters
and advocates for Basic Income. At some point in the future we may
have a joint event; after all, policies like Basic Income are far more
likely to be passed in a government elected with Proportional
Representation.

Here are some Electoral Reform happenings over the last few weeks,
suitable as Discussion Starters:

Fair Vote Waterloo hosted a panel discussion with Dennis Pilon and
Barry Kay on 7 April 2016. Were you there? If not, you can listen to
the audio recording. Video to follow!

On Wednesday, 13 April 2016 there was a Twitter online chat organized
by Samara Canada with the hashtag #SamaraChat — did you participate?

On Thursday, 14 April 2016 a public symposium was held by
iVote-JeVote. Amongst the panelists was The Hon. Maryam Monsef,
Minister of Democratic Institutions, a promising development.

Still, some people fear the Liberal government will not have electoral
reform in place for the next election: Critics, experts fear Ottawa is
running out of time for electoral reform (Globe and Mail)

…but Minister Monsef is at least going through the motions: Monsef
introduces eight principles that will guide electoral reform (iPolitics)

And a lovely bit of local colour accompanied the Rabble.ca article
Activists gear up for 'historic opportunity' to usher in proportional
representation — that’s Fair Vote Waterloo’s Byron Weber Becker and
Sharon Sommerville in a photo taken by Laurel L. Russwurm!
