This is the release I threw together last night. I will be sending it out
tonight, I think. Comments/corrections are welcome. (I know I
misattributed Angela because I could not read my writing...)

I have been using Derek as the media contact. Should I continue doing this
or does somebody else (maybe one of the co-chairs) want to take on the
role?

KITCHENER - On Tuesday evening, a passionate group of local
residents gathered for the second annual general meeting of the
Waterloo Region chapter of Fair Vote Canada. They selected an energetic
new executive and organized in preparation for the provincial
referendum on electoral reform this October 10.

"I'm really excited to be a part of making history in Ontario," said
new executive member Angela Yenssen. "This could be the best
opportunity for people to impact the political process that we've ever
seen."

Chapter treasurer Sean Geobey said, "first-past-the-post is a
40-60-80 voting system: 40 percent of the vote receives 60 percent of
the seats and 100 percent of the power. Under proportional
representation, 40 percent of the vote translates to 40 percent of the
seats."

Other members of the executive include teacher Shannon Adshade,
engineering student Derek Kraan, programmer Kevin Smith and Wilfrid
Laurier University political science professor Brian Tanguay, who
drafted the 2004 Law Commission of Canada's report Voting Matters:
Electoral Reform for Canada.

The selection of this executive continues Vote Canada's commitment to
public education about the upcoming October 10 referendum.

As part of this campaign, the chapter invites the public to attend an
upcoming information night, being held at 7:00pm at the Faculty of
Social Work building in downtown Kitchener. The next information night
will be held May 8, and subsequent ones are scheduled for the second
Tuesday of each month.

Fair Vote Canada is a grassroots multipartisan organization dedicated
to the adoption of fair and proportional voting systems across the
country.
