The webinar last night was excellent and I'm glad their material will be available online.

Their moral frame and the emphasis on inclusion for all Canadians is, I believe, correct.

Sorry I can't join you tomorrow as we are at the cottage all week.

I hope you can have a good discussion.

  Hello FairVoting Friends,
There is a very worthwhile webinar on the use of language in discussing proportional representation this Monday, July 29 at 7 pm. People who have seen it report that it is very helpful in understanding how messages, concepts and narratives help people connect with change. There is a very brief outline of the content below and a link to register.
   Hope it is of interest!
   Kind regards, Sharon for FVC-WR

We all understand that electoral systems have a profound effect on resulting policy. Adopting proportional representation will ensure that the diversity of political views of people are fairly represented, and will enable progress in areas that truly concern the majority of Canadians.

But what is the key to a successful messaging campaign for electoral reform? How can we win the hearts and minds of Canadians over to proportional representation and finally achieve a system that truly reflects the views of people?

The answer requires a shift in understanding of how people think about politics, and a change in how we present our cause through language. Cognitive science tells us that when messages evoke concepts, metaphors and narratives associated with the correct moral framework, they become stronger and more influential. We believe this understanding is a missing element that will raise our messaging to the next level and help us get the most out of our federal and provincial campaigns for electoral reform.

Webinar Content:

   -
What has been missing from current messaging for Electoral Reform?

   -
How does cognitive science explain how people make decisions about politics?

   -
How our opponents have been using cognitive science to successfully control public discourse on electoral reform.

   -
How to use the same science to successfully achieve change for electoral reform.

   -
Why rational, evidence-based arguments can actually hurt our cause.

   -
How to reframe our opponents arguments and change public discourse to our advantage.

Presented by Public Relations for Proportional Representation, a non-partisan group dedicated to message development, training and education for electoral reform.
