In its Election Ontario brochure the Council of Canadians identify 4 areas of concern for members.  One is that of democracy where they advocate for the establishment of a Citizens' Assembly.  this has been distributed to Council supporters in Ontario.

| Dear David, |

  |

|
|
Today marks the beginning of the election period in Ontario. On June 2, Ontarians will head to the polls, for a vote that will decide what our communities of today and tomorrow will look like.

For decades, successive Ontario governments have put corporate interests ahead of the needs of people in the province. Developers, land speculators, extractive industries, and big corporations have succeeded in tipping the scale of policymaking to line their pockets – through extensive political donations, lobbying, PR campaigns, and revolving-door relationships with decision-makers.

This corporate agenda has been on full display under Doug Ford. His government has weakened and privatized health care services, deregulated environmental protection, railroaded progress on climate action, and undermined democracy.

On June 2nd, we have a chance to change that. It’s time we vote for the future Ontarians deserve – one that invests in care, communities, climate, and democracy.

Write to your local candidates today and ask them to put people before profits and commit to building the Ontario we want.

Many of us have been waiting for this day for a long time. I know I have.

I knew I wanted a new leader when I joined countless other Ottawa residents in filling sandbags to keep our homes safe from a once-in-a-hundred-years flood. Just weeks before, the Ford government had cut flood management funding and weakened Conservation Authorities. I also knew we deserve better when he lifted the public health measures that could have protected my unvaccinated toddler from COVID-19, in the name of business. This government’s priority has always been to make his corporate friends richer, no matter the cost.

But communities across Ontario are fighting back. This past weekend, we joined workers, labour allies, and community groups in a province-wide day of action to say loud and clear to every candidate who wants our vote that they must commit to investing in public services, sustainable and affordable communities, and ambitious climate action.

We believe that people in Ontario deserve to live a life with dignity, supported by critical public services like health care, education, mental health, and eldercare. We want all levels of government to invest in affordable and sustainable communities, strengthen democracy, and put communities before corporate interests.

The Council of Canadians and our Ontario chapters have outlined a vision for the Ontario we want, alongside some key demands, to assist you in conversations with your neighbours and candidates.
