John Deverell always makes me laugh! Prior to this, he had written to the CBC,
challenging their language. Thank goodness for tireless advocates of honesty.

Marc Mayrand

Chief Electoral Officer

Ottawa, Canada

Re: Elections Canada and Truth in Advertising

Dear Mr. Mayrand

I was struck today by your slogan displayed prominently on the Weather
Channel.

Vote. Shape Your World. Elections Canada.

Clearly Elections Canada is projecting a false message. The strong
suggestion is that every Canadian voter has influence on the shape of
Parliament, and thus potentially on government and law.

As you surely know, this is radically untrue.

A true and accurate statement would be something more like this:

Vote. About Half of You Will Elect An MP. The Other Half Will be
Unrepresented in Parliament But Still Required To Pay Taxes. Elections
Canada.

Why do you take it upon yourself to grossly exaggerate the democratic
potential of Canada's undemocratic electoral system?

Shouldn't an honest recipient of a public paycheque let the voting system
stand or fall on its actual merits if any? Don't be surprised if some public
interest group takes you to court on this one.
