[fvc-wat-disc] FVC releases poll that confirms Cdns. want PR

Let’s be clear.
I did some canvassing and I agree with Sharon that we got a clear majority supporting the campaign and signing on.
I agree that being undecided does not mean no.
However, we also know that the government that wants any excuse to get away from dealing with ER, will use the undecided as lack of consensus.
What happened in PEI when a lot of people didn’t vote?
What happened in BC when they couldn’t hit the government’s requirement of 60% to constitute approval of change?
I agree we should use the poll results and point out the yes and no percentages as the real consensus among those who understand and care.
Those are the people who should be deciding our electoral system.
But will the MPs receiving the petitions see it that way?
Dave

See, this is alarming to me that you would think that.

Unsure/don't know means some people do not have enough knowledge to form an opinion on a complex subject. It also means some people couldn't care less because they don't vote, and don't care "about politics."

While I think it would be good if everyone felt the duty to vote, I mean the duty to become informed and then vote. If you aren't going to do that I'd rather you sat it out. So for the second group of voters above, see ya.

But for the first group of voters--that's where WE come in! By speaking factually at all times, by exposing the myths they will hear from the other side, by pointing out the principles of democracy which are ONLY served by PR, this is fertile ground for us. And if we can't get to them all, they will remain unsure because this group of voters will likely listen to both sides of an argument before making up their minds.

What it ABSOLUTELY doesn't mean is that they vote no as a percentage. Unsure does NOT equal no. Just like it doesn't equal yes!

And all of THAT said, please, please do share the poll results in full (the .pdf) when sharing one of these posters.

When I looked at the results online, it was concerning that, when 67% of people answered yes, it was 67% of decided voters, not 67% of those polled.
If 30% were unsure and not then included in the graph, it really means support could end up being just over 50%.
The government could then use that to say there was not enough declared support.

  Good Evening FairVoting Friends,

Last week FairVote Canada released the results of a poll done by Strategic Communications between April 22 - May 9th. 15, 806 people were surveyed in 20 Liberal ridings and the results confirm that there is a consensus in support of proportion representation.

Closer to home, results from Kitchener Centre are clear; 82% of respondents support proportional representation and 75% of respondents want Raj Saini to advocate for PR in Parliament.

Here is the report from Strategic Communications:

Can you help spread the word that Kitchener Centre wants electoral reform? Two posters that can be used on social media are attached.

On May 31st, Parliament will discuss and vote on an NDP motion to adopt the recommendations of the electoral reform committee to move to a moderate form of PR. Tomorrow we will email you about a campaign to tell Liberal MPs to keep their promise on electoral reform and vote in favour of the NDP motion.

  With thanks,
  Sharon

No other Western democratic country concentrates as much political power in the hands of one person as Canada does with her Prime Minister.
